Madikeri (Karnataka), July 7 -- A major tragedy was narrowly averted after a group of college students, who allegedly ignored safety barricades and entered a prohibited area at the picturesque Mallalli Falls in Karnataka's Kodagu district, were rescued in a dramatic operation after a sudden surge in the water level left them stranded in the middle of the waterfall.

According to officials, the students crossed barricades erected to keep visitors away from dangerous sections of the waterfall during the monsoon and ventured onto a rocky outcrop near the centre of the cascading falls.
