Kolkata, June 7 -- In a bizarre incident, a Trinamool Congress leader was allegedly assaulted, partially head shaved, garlanded with shoes and paraded through a village by angry residents over allegations of embezzling funds meant for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme in Howrah's Shyampur on Sunday.
The incident took place in the Amardaha area of Shyampur and triggered tension across the locality.
The accused leader, identified as Sannyasi Manna, is known as a long-time Trinamool Congress worker and local leader.
According to local residents, Manna had been facing allegations of misappropriating funds allocated under the 100-day rural employment scheme.
