Kolkata, May 20 -- A Trinamool Congress councillor of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation near Kolkata was arrested on alleged extortion and intimidation charges on Wednesday, police said.
Ranjan Poddar, councillor of ward number 34 and chairman of borough V, was nabbed by the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate late on Wednesday night.
He was arrested by a team from Bidhannagar North Police Station in connection with an alleged extortion racket operating in Salt Lake's Karunamoyee bus stand area.
Police also arrested Rana Haldar, described by investigators as a close aide of the councillor.
