Tirupati, March 29 -- Strong and empowered Gram Panchayats are essential for ensuring effective rural development, speakers said at a webinar organised by the Academy of Grassroots Studies and Research of India (AGRASR) here on Sunday.

Delivering the keynote address at a webinar to discuss the topic of whether the VB-G RAM-G scheme is superior to the MGNREGS, Venkatrao Y. Ghorpade, working Chairman of the Karnataka state Panchayati Raj Parishad, said a nationwide debate is underway on whether the proposed VB-G RAM-G scheme, intended to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, would deliver the expected benefits.
