Agartala, July 24 -- The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has proactively acknowledged the custodial death of a life convict and instructed the Inspector General of Prisons to provide a detailed report on it within four weeks.
The Commission began its proceedings after learning that Bharani Das, a life convict held at Central Correctional Home in Bishalgarh, passed away on July 18 while receiving treatment at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Centre in Agartala.
According to the report, Das had been admitted to the facility on June 9 for specialised care. Noting that the inmate was in judicial custody at the time of his death, THRC stated that the circumstances of the incident warranted investigation.
