Mumbai, July 9 -- Dramatic visuals of hundreds, possibly thousands, of LPG cylinders bobbing in the rain-swollen Patalganga River have triggered alarm in Raigad district after heavy monsoon runoff reportedly swept them away from a storage facility near Mastan Naka on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway.
Officials said the cylinders were first spotted early Tuesday morning by locals near the Mastan Naka bridge, about 45 km from Navi Mumbai. Floodwaters from upstream had breached the compound wall of a private LPG godown, washing the metal cylinders into the river.
A multi-agency team comprising the Raigad District Disaster Management Cell, NDRF, local fire brigade and police has launched a recovery operation along a 3-km stretch of the river.
