Hyderabad, Dec. 12 -- The State Election Commission (SEC) on Friday announced the results of the first phase of the three-phase Gram Panchayat elections held across Telangana.
According to early indications, the ruling Congress secured a majority of seats, followed by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and the BJP. Independent candidates are said to have won around 455 sarpanch positions.
The SEC also declared results for 3,347 Upa Sarpanch positions.
Polling for 3,834 sarpanch seats and 27,636 ward member positions was conducted on Thursday between 7 am and 1 pm. Counting began at 2 pm and continued past midnight. The first phase recorded a high voter turnout of 84.28 per cent.
