Damascus/Jerusalem, Sept. 1 -- In a significant development in the middle east, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani Tuesday said Damascus was pursuing a "diplomatic solution" with Israel through US mediation despite continued Israeli military operations inside Syria.

The two nations have been formally at war since Israel's establishment in 1948. Israel has carried out numerous strikes in Syria since the ouster of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024 by Islamists, generally describing the operations as intended to prevent military equipment from falling into the hands of hostile groups amid the country's political transition.
