Bengaluru, July 19 -- BJP MP Tejasvi Surya on Sunday alleged that the Karnataka government's tender for the proposed tunnel road project permits construction of a five-storey commercial complex inside Lalbagh Botanical Garden, turning the controversy over land acquisition into a larger debate over the alleged commercialisation of one of Bengaluru's oldest heritage green spaces.

Leading a protest outside Lalbagh, the Bengaluru South MP claimed that while the state government has maintained that a portion of the botanical garden is required only for constructing an entry and exit ramp for the proposed tunnel road, the tender document authorises development far beyond transport infrastructure.
