New Delhi, March 17 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition seeking a declaration of Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti as a national holiday across the country, observing that India already has a large number of public and religious holidays.

A Bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta declined the plea filed by the All-India Shiromani Singh Sabha, which had approached the Court in 2021.

During the hearing, the Court indicated that adding more holidays may not be necessary, noting that the country already observes several such occasions.
