Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 4 -- In a medical breakthrough described as the first of its kind globally, doctors at the Government Medical College Hospital here have successfully saved the life of a 17-year-old boy suffering from two simultaneous brain infections -- amoebic meningoencephalitis and aspergillus flavus fungal abscess.

According to medical officials, the boy, a student from Sooranad in Kollam district, battled the life-threatening conditions for nearly three months before being discharged in good health.

Health Minister Veena George congratulated the medical teams in the state capital and Alappuzha Medical Colleges for their "timely diagnosis, coordinated effort, and surgical precision" that ensured the rare recovery.
