Mumbai, July 7 -- Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh on Tuesday expressed serious concern in the Maharashtra Assembly over the "growing commercialization" of higher education, calling for stricter regulation of private and deemed universities.

Shaikh alleged that private institutions were charging "massive fees" for courses that cost significantly less in public universities like Mumbai University, putting poor and middle-class students at a disadvantage.

Shaikh urged the state government to impose a strict fee cap on private and deemed universities to prevent what he called "profiteering" in education.
