Washington/Havana, May 30 -- The head of the US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) held a rare face-to-face meeting with senior Cuban military officials at the periphery of the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, amid the increasing ongoing diplomatic strain between Washington and Havana.
SOUTHCOM commander Gen Francis Donovan in a meeting with Cuban military chief Gen Roberto Legra Sotolongo and other senior Cuban military officers on Friday held what the US military described as a "brief exchange on operational security matters".
According to SOUTHCOM, Donovan also carried out a security assessment of the base and discussed force protection, operational readiness and the safety of military personnel and their families.
