Mumbai, April 19 -- Maharashtra BJP vice-president and former MP Kirit Somaiya on Sunday alleged that as many as 164 unauthorised schools are operating on government land in Mumbai, primarily in minority dominated localities.

He claimed that these schools are concentrated in areas such as Govandi, Malad and Kurla, and are functioning without any official permission.

Addressing a press conference, Somaiya said that what he described as a "land mafia" has been active in the city for the past 15 to 20 years. According to him, the modus operandi involves encroaching on land and subsequently setting up private schools without obtaining the necessary approvals.
