Kolkata, Sept. 8 -- A sharp drop in onion supplies has pushed prices up sharply in Kolkata and the suburbs, putting additional pressure on household budgets.
The price of onions has shot up over the past two weeks, reaching more than three times the usual rate. The onion is now selling at Rs 65-70 per kg in city markets. The rising onion prices, coupled with higher vegetable costs, are putting additional pressure on household budgets.
"The price of onions has reached so high that I have to either cut down consumption or buy fewer vegetables now. On days when I buy meat or fish, I buy fewer vegetables due to budget constraints," said Paromita, a homemaker in South Kolkata.
