Shimla, Jan. 21 -- The Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) on Wednesday clarified that the installation of smart electricity meters across the state will not lead to higher power bills or affect existing electricity subsidies.

A spokesperson of the HPSEBL said that free electricity up to 125 units will continue as per the prevailing policy, and consumers should not fear any increase in tariffs due to the new meters.

"Smart meters are only a modern tool to measure electricity consumption. They have no role in deciding tariffs or billing policies," the spokesperson said.
