Bhagalpur, May 4 -- In a major incident, a significant portion of the Vikramshila Ganga Bridge, considered a lifeline of the region, collapsed into the Ganga River early this morning in Bhagalpur.

District Magistrate Dr. Naval Kishore Choudhary said that a nearly 25-metre-long slab between pillars 4 and 5 near pier number 133 suddenly fell into the river.

The District Magistrate said that immediate action was taken late Sunday night following reports of a large gap developing near pier 133. Traffic police and local officials rushed to the spot and ensured the bridge was cleared and closed, preventing any loss of life.

He said that traffic had already been suspended on the bridge, a major tragedy was averted.
