Kolkata, Aug. 13 -- A Singapore-flagged container vessel collided with the Hooghly river embankment near Nurpur in Diamond Harbour, South 24-Parganas, raising concerns over navigational safety along the busy river route.
The vessel, identified as "Naotavum", was reportedly carrying cargo from Singapore to the Kolkata port when it lost control near the Nurpur ferry ghat during high tide on Wednesday. According to local and administrative sources, a sudden mechanical problem caused the vessel to veer off course before it rammed into the embankment beside the pontoon.
