New York, Aug. 30 -- American sixth seed Ben Shelton's US Open campaign ended in heartbreak today IST when he retired during his third-round clash against France's Adrian Mannarino with the match delicately poised at two sets apiece.
Shelton, who had captured his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title in Toronto earlier this month, began experiencing sharp pain in his left shoulder early in the fourth set. After a medical timeout and several visible signs of distress, the 22-year-old conceded defeat at 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6.
"It was the worst pain I've ever felt in my life," Shelton told his box, before taking his father and coach Bryan Shelton's advice to retire, the first time in his career he has done so at tour level.
