Lucknow, April 20 -- Severe heatwaves continued in many parts of Uttar Pradesh.

According to the Meteorological Department, a continuous rise in daytime temperatures has led to heatwave-like conditions in several districts of the state.

On Sunday, Prayagraj was the hottest city in the state, recording a maximum temperature of 44.6 degrees Celsius, 4.7 degrees above normal. This was also the second highest temperature in the country. Varanasi (BHU) recorded 44.2degC, Sultanpur 43.8degC, and Agra, Banda, and Jhansi 43.6degC.

Meteorologist Atul Kumar Singh said that due to dry westerly winds and the influence of an anti-cyclone near interior Maharashtra, temperatures in the state have crossed 40 degrees Celsius.
