Ranchi, March 1 -- Several Maoists are reported to have been killed in an encounter between security forces and members of the banned CPI (Maoist) in the Saranda forests of West Singhbhum district on Sunday.
According to police headquarters, the exchange of fire began around 5 am during a combing operation in the Chotanagra and Jaraikela police station areas.
Jharkhand Police IG Operations Dr Michael Raj said preliminary information suggests that several Maoists were killed in the gunfight. However, no bodies have been recovered so far and search operations are continuing in the area.
Officials said the encounter followed an improvised explosive device blast triggered by Maoists during the operation.
