Thiruvananthapuram/Kozhikode, June 15 -- A seven-year-old boy undergoing treatment for Shigella infection at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode died, taking the number of confirmed deaths due to the bacterial disease in Kerala this year to four.

The deceased, Arjav, a native of Pookkottur in Malappuram district, had been admitted to the hospital after contracting the infection. Despite medical treatment, he succumbed to the illness, health officials said on Monday.

According to official figures, Kerala has recorded 135 confirmed cases of Shigella infection so far this year. Kozhikode district has reported the highest number of cases, emerging as the worst-affected district in the state.
