New Delhi/Ranchi, Feb. 24 -- Seven people were killed when an air ambulance crashed in Jharkhand's Chatra district on Monday night. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the aircraft had requested a route deviation due to adverse weather shortly before losing contact, adding that a probe is needed to determine the exact cause of the crash.

The Beechcraft C90 aircraft, registered VT-AJV and operated by Delhi-based Redbird Airways Pvt Ltd, departed from Ranchi's Birsa Munda Airport at 7:11 pm for a medical evacuation mission. The aircraft lost both radar and communication contact with Kolkata at 7:34 pm, about 100 nautical miles southeast of Varanasi.
