Chennai, Dec. 30 -- In what could be seen as a minor setback for the DMK government of MK Stalin, President Draupadi Murmuhas returned the Madras University Bill adoptedin the Tamil Nadu Assembly, stripping the Governor, also Chancellor of all state-run varsities, of the powers to appoint and removeVice Chancellors.

The President has returned the Bill, passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly in April 2022, back to the Legislature for reconsideration.

The TN Assembly passed the Bill and had sent it for Ppresidential assent, aiming to take control of the 168-year-old university whichhas been functioning without a Vice chancellor for over two years.
