New Delhi, Nov. 11 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed an earlier directive requiring the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising police officers from both Hindu and Muslim communities to probe an assault case linked to the May 2023 communal violence in Akola, Maharashtra.

The stay comes as the Court issued notice on a review petition filed by the State of Maharashtra.

The matter was considered by a Bench comprising Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria after a two-judge Bench, earlier examining the review petition, delivered a split verdict on whether the earlier SIT direction should stand.
