Ranchi, March 10 -- The Supreme Court has granted two weeks' time to Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra to comply with the Jharkhand High Court's direction to pay Rs 20 lakh compensation to the parents of a student who died following an assault incident linked to the institute's campus.

A bench comprising Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan was hearing a Special Leave Petition filed by the institute against the High Court order.

During the hearing, counsel appearing for the petitioner submitted that BIT Mesra was willing to comply with the High Court's direction if some time was granted. Accepting the submission, the court granted two weeks to make the payment and posted the matter for further hearing on March 23.
