New Delhi, Dec. 1 -- The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to a man accused of cheating a businessman of Rs 3.90 crore by falsely claiming to be the nephew of union Home Minister Amit Shah.

A Bench comprising Justice J.K. Maheshwari and Justice Vijay Bishnoi noted that the accused had already spent more than four years in custody, while the maximum punishment for the offences currently charged is seven years.

The Court also recorded that although charges were framed in 2022, only the first witness out of 34 has been examined, indicating slow progress in the trial.

Additional Solicitor General Vikramjit Banerjee, appearing for the Delhi government, opposed the bail plea.
