Parmod KumarNew Delhi, Sept. 1 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Central government to examine the introduction of totaliser machines for counting votes recorded in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), after the Election Commission of India (ECI) supported the objective of protecting the secrecy of booth-wise voting patterns but flagged legal and practical difficulties in implementing the mechanism.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana asked the ECI to place an appropriate proposal before the Centre, which would examine the possible impediments, if any, and any adverse consequences of introducing totalisers.
