Srinagar, May 19 -- Several political leaders and civil society organisations on Tuesday strongly condemned the demolition drive carried out at Sidhra in Jammu, where authorities demolished dozens of hutments and temporary structures during an anti-encroachment operation rendering many Gujjar-Bakerwal families homeless.

President of the J&K Peoples Conference and MLA from Handwara, Sajad Lone, termed the demolitions "deeply disturbing" and demanded that the government clarify who authorised the action. Questioning the administration's silence, Lone said the government must treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves.
