Patna, May 14 -- The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Sonu Kumar Rai secured a significant victory in the by-election to the Bhojpur-Buxar Local Authorities' seat of the Bihar Legislative Council by defeating the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) candidate Kanhaiya Prasad.

RJD nominee Sonu Kumar Rai won the seat by defeating Kanhaiya Prasad of JDU by a margin of 354 votes. RJD wrested the seat from JD(U).

According to official figures, Sonu Kumar Rai polled 2,507 votes, while Kanhaiya Prasad secured 2,153 votes.

Though 2,668 votes were required for a clear majority, Sonu Kumar Rai was declared elected after the counting of second-preference votes, as he maintained a decisive lead.
