Bhubaneswar, Oct. 28 -- Climate change, whose effects are being felt across the globe, is increasingly impacting human health, with extreme heat events now linked to a rise in cardiovascular diseases, an eminent medical expert has warned.
"Extreme heat stress places additional strain on the heart, particularly in individuals with pre-existing conditions such as hypertension and heart disease," said Dr. Debi Prasad Tripathy, Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University, Canada.
Citing a 2019 study published in Environmental Health Perspectives, Dr. Tripathy said heat waves significantly increase the incidence of heart attacks and cardiac arrests, particularly among older adults.
