Panchkula, Sept. 4 -- Indian Railways is set to strengthen safety and maintenance of passenger coaches and freight wagons, with measures including only USB-C charging points, Mega Coaching Depots near major railway hubs, a review of Vande Bharat seat designs, enhanced fire safety and stricter action against suppliers over recurring component failures.

The measures emerged from the two-day conference of Principal Chief Mechanical Engineers (PCMEs) held in Kolkata on June 12-13, 2026, where the Railway Board reviewed rolling-stock safety, maintenance standards, passenger amenities and infrastructure.
