Panchkula, Sept. 27 -- The Railway Board has asked all zonal railways to consider deploying waste-compactor smart bins at high-footfall railway stations on an experimental basis, seeking a technology-driven solution to overflowing conventional bins and the resulting litter at busy stations.
In an order issued to general managers of all zonal railways, the Board said conventional litter bins at high-footfall stations frequently overflow because of their limited holding capacity, leading to littering and deterioration in cleanliness standards.
The Board noted that Indian Railways, being a Bulk Waste Generator under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, is required to ensure efficient management of solid waste.
