Hyderabad, March 11 -- People should quit smoking to prevent breathlessness and protect their lungs, noted epidemiologist Naresh Purohit said on Wednesday.

Addressing an awareness programme organised on the occasion of No Smoking Day by the Indian Institute of Public Health in Hyderabad, Dr. Purohit said health largely depends on individual lifestyle choices and urged people to stay away from harmful habits such as smoking.

Dr. Purohit, Advisor to the National Communicable Disease Control Programme, said early detection of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) can significantly reduce lung damage, noting that symptoms often appear only after the age of 60 when people start experiencing shortness of breath.
