Bengaluru, June 19 -- The long-running Cauvery water dispute has once again flared up, with Karnataka and Tamil Nadu taking sharply opposed positions over the proposed Mekedatu dam project, after Tamil Nadu's Assembly unanimously passed a resolution objecting to it.

Responding strongly to the development, Priyank Kharge said the Karnataka government would firmly protect its interests and proceed within the legal framework, asserting that the state is only seeking to utilise surplus Cauvery water that otherwise flows into the sea.
