Tokyo, July 28 -- A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan's southern island of Kyushu on Tuesday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for parts of the region, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The quake struck at 4:27 pm local time (07:27 GMT), with its epicentre located off Kumamoto Prefecture at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
The JMA issued a 1-meter tsunami warning for coastal areas along Ariake Bay and the Yatsushiro Sea, while emergency alerts were activated across several prefectures.
The earthquake registered the maximum Level 7 on Japan's Shindo seismic intensity scale, indicating extremely violent shaking capable of causing severe damage.
