Dharamshala, July 12 -- Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and former union Minister Shanta Kumar on Saturday expressed concern over India's rising population, saying the growing population was the root cause of poverty, unemployment and mounting pressure on resources.

Marking World Population Day, Kumar said the observance was introduced to promote population control, but despite annual awareness campaigns, India's population has continued to rise.

He noted that India's population had increased from about 39 crore (390 million) at the time of Independence in 1947 to around 145 crore (1.45 billion) today, making it the world's most populous country.
