Chandigarh, Jan. 15 -- Doctors at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, have successfully performed a highly complex and rare brain tumour surgery on a two-year-old child from Haryana, giving the toddler a new lease of life and setting a global benchmark in minimally invasive paediatric neurosurgery.

A multidisciplinary team of neurosurgery and ENT specialists at PGIMER removed a massive 7-centimetre skull base meningioma - a rare brain tumour arising from the lower part of the skull - entirely through an endoscopic endonasal route.

The nine-hour-long procedure was carried out without any open cranial surgery, a first of its kind in such a young patient.
