Nagpur, June 26 -- : More than one-third of the sitting members of the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLCs) belong to established political families, reflecting the continued dominance of dynastic politics in the state's Upper House despite its intended role of ensuring broader representation.
An analysis of the present composition of the 78-member Council, of which 73 seats are currently occupied, shows that 24 members have close family ties with current or former MPs, MLAs, ministers or influential leaders associated with cooperatives, educational institutions and local bodies.
