New Delhi, July 12 -- More than 17 million taxpayers have filed their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 so far, the Income Tax Department said on Saturday, urging eligible taxpayers yet to file their returns to complete the process before the deadline.

In a post on social media platform X, the department said, "Over 17 million taxpayers have already taken the smart step and filed their ITRs for A.Y. 2026-27."It added that over one million returns were filed on Friday alone, indicating a sharp rise in filings as the due date approaches.

The last date to file ITR-1 (Sahaj) and ITR-2 for income earned during the financial year 2025-26 is July 31.
