Bengaluru, May 17 -- The Centre's ambitious 'One Nation, One Election' proposal, aimed at synchronising Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, is facing renewed political scrutiny after the Janata Dal (Secular) raised concerns over its constitutional and federal implications.
The regional party has sought changes in certain provisions of the proposal, arguing that while the idea may improve administrative efficiency and reduce election-related expenditure, it cannot come at the cost of India's federal structure or the autonomy of states.
Backing the party's stand, former Prime Minister and JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda said the proposal requires deeper scrutiny to ensure it does not disturb the constitutional balance between the Centre and states....
