Chennai, June 1 -- In a tragic incident, a migrant worker died and 48 others were injured when the iron handrails of a staircase, where they were sitting and watching the IPL final on Sunday night, collapsed.
The incident occurred at a temporary workers' accommodation in Nandambakkam area in the city when hundreds of labourers gathered and crowded onto a staircase ramp to watch the summit clash of the IPL between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.
Police said more than 100 workers, employed by a leading construction firm, had crowded onto one section of an iron staircase and were leaning against the handrail and cheering for their teams.
