Shillong, June 11 -- Ruling National People's Party (NPP) leader and former Home Minister James Sangma was declared elected unopposed to the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Meghalaya on Thursday.
Sangma, the elder brother of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, is the consensus candidate of the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government-2,0.
The certificate of election was handed over by Malthus S. Sangma, secretary, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and Returning Officer for the Rajya Sabha election, who officially declared James Sangma elected to the Upper House of Parliament following the completion of the withdrawal process of nomination papers.
