Pyongyang, Sept. 7 -- North Korea has commissioned a new 5,000-tonne naval destroyer, the Kang Kon, as Pyongyang accelerates efforts to modernize its fleet and develop a navy capable of supporting the country's nuclear deterrence strategy, state media reported Monday.
The commissioning ceremony, held in the eastern port city of Wonsan, was attended by North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un, who called the 5,000-tonne vessel "essentially an offensive destroyer" and part of "the state nuclear counteraction system," according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
"The new-generation destroyer should deal a deadly retaliatory blow at the enemies," Kim said, stressing that the vessel would play a role in North Korea's nuclear deterrence.
