Mumbai, May 25 -- Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane has sparked a controversy ahead of Eid al-Adha by suggesting that Muslims should celebrate the festival "virtually" instead of carrying out the traditional animal sacrifice associated with the occasion.
Talking to reporters, the Maharashtra Ports Development Minister drew a comparison between environmental advisories issued during Hindu festivals and the rituals performed during Eid al-Adha. Referring to Holi and Diwali celebrations, Rane said Hindus are often urged to observe festivals in an environmentally conscious manner to avoid smoke, chemical and sound pollution.
