Mysuru, July 11 -- Veteran playback singer S Janaki, revered as the "Nightingale of South India", passed away here on Saturday at 88, marking the end of one of the most illustrious careers in Indian music.
A legendary voice whose songs transcended languages and generations, Janaki recorded thousands of songs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and several other Indian languages over a career spanning more than six decades. Her unmatched versatility, emotive renditions and flawless diction made her one of the country's most celebrated playback singers.
