New Delhi, Aug. 28 -- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report concerning the alleged corporal punishment of around 18 students by a teacher, who reportedly locked them inside a room at a government school in the Haflaganj area of Katihar district, Bihar, on August 21.
In a statement issued here today, the NHRC said that it has noted that, if the report is found to be true, it would constitute a grave violation of the human rights of the students. Accordingly, it has "issued notices to the state chief secretary and the superintendent of police, Katihar, seeking a detailed report within two weeks," said the statement.
