Shimla, Jan. 10 -- The recent intervention of the National Green Tribunal has acquired renewed significance following the alarming incident at Chalonthi in Himachal Pradesh, where cracks developed in residential houses and a hotel above an under-construction four-lane tunnel on the Dhalli-Sanjauli bypass.

On January 8, just two days before the Chalonthi incident, the Principal Bench of NGT took cognizance of environmental and safety concerns related to the widening of National Highway-5 (NH-5) in Shimla district.

The tribunal observed that the project raises substantial issues regarding compliance with environmental norms.
