New Delhi, Jan. 20 -- Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Tuesday said that democracy derives its true legitimacy not merely from the existence of accountability mechanisms, but from how sincerely and seriously legislatures exercise them.

He also expressed concern over declining legislative sittings and stressed the need for stronger oversight of the executive.

Addressing the 86th All India Presiding Officers Conference (AIPOC), being held in Lucknow, Gupta described legislative accountability as a living relationship between the people and their elected representatives.
