Kolkata, May 27 -- National award-winning Bengali film director Anik Dutta has died after a fall from the roof of his home in Kolkata's upscale Gariahat on Wednesday afternoon, sending shockwaves through the film industry. He was 60.

According to sources, the filmmaker was immediately taken to a private hospital in Dhakuria after the incident in a critical condition. He was declared dead on arrival. Anik Dutta's body will be taken to SSKM hospital for autopsy.

The police have already begun investigation.

Dutta rose to fame in 2012 with "Bhooter Bhabishyat", a film that combined political and social satire with a horror narrative. The film is considered a landmark in Bengali cinema by many critics and viewers.
